THE idea of showing a Walmart receipt to a staffer after buying groceries has caused division among shoppers.

Some shoppers comply with the request, while others have acted defiantly and refused to follow orders, protesting their innocence that they didn’t steal.

Krisa Brass, of the Scottsbluff Police Department in Nebraska, said shoppers are allowed to refuse to comply with the request, per The Star Herald.

But, she warned: “Here’s the kicker: If they suspect you of shoplifting, they are allowed to detain you until law enforcement arrives per Nebraska state statute.”

Brass said staffers have the authority to tell shoppers to wait for the cops, and she said they can detain customers suspected of stealing.

Walmart does not have a nationwide policy requiring shoppers to show their receipts when leaving supermarkets – unlike Costco.

Receipts are checked to ensure purchased goods have been processed correctly, per the wholesaler.

A post on its website said: “It’s our most effective method of maintaining accuracy in inventory control, and it’s also a good way to ensure that our members have been charged properly for their purchases.”

Former staffers have taken to TikTok to explain that receipts are checked to ensure customers have been charged correctly.

Ex-employees have referred to a code that is on the bottom of receipts which changes daily to mitigate the risk of fraud.

But, the measures have not been welcomed by all shoppers, with some taking a stand against Walmart.

Some shoppers have been offended when asked to show proof of their receipt.

One social media user (@backtablack) posted on X, formerly Twitter: “I don’t steal but I’m not showing my receipt to no one unless they bout to give me every red cent back tf.”

Another shopper (@dionne_ 805) quipped: “I’m not showing my receipt. There are cameras everywhere.

“If they don’t capture my entire transactions… not a me problem.”

Legal experts have warned that shoppers could end up in hot water if they don’t show the piece of paper.

Renowned attorney George LaMarche told The U.S. Sun earlier this month that shoppers who don’t comply with the request could be banned from stores and potentially issued with trespassing orders if they try to enter them again.
