‘Has that been transported as hand luggage on Ryanair?’ Trafalgar Square’s Christmas tree is mocked by Londoners as it arrives from Norway ahead of lighting ceremony

Trafalgar Square’s Christmas tree has been mocked by Londoners for its threadbare appearance after arriving as a gift from Norway earlier today.
The tree – a centrepiece at the London landmark – has been given every year since 1947 in recognition of the UK’s help during World War Two.
However, since its arrival earlier today, people have taken to Twitter to comment on the threadbare appearance of the tree’s foliage.
One person joked: ‘Judging by the photos of the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree being felled last week in Norway and arriving today, it’s been transported as hand luggage on Ryanair.’
Meanwhile, another said: ‘Every year Oslo sends a Christmas tree to Trafalgar Square, in gratitude for our help during the Second World War.

‘But I’m starting to think perhaps the Norwegians, aren’t so fond of us.’
Someone else commented: ‘Today Trafalgar Square gets their annual Christmas tree gifted by Norway. It looks like yet again they forgot half of the tree back in Oslo.’
One person on Twitter compared the state of this year’s tree to that of 2008 by placing two contrasting images side by side. Alongside the photographs they wrote: ‘2008 Trafalgar Square Christmas tree vs. 2022 Trafalgar Square Christmas tree.’

This year’s tree has been said to stand at 68 feet (21 metres) tall. It was decorated with lights earlier today which will not be turned on until a ceremony on Thursday evening.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of a spruce tree sent from Norway and placed into Trafalgar Square.
Another person posted a photograph of the tree on Twitter and wrote: ‘The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree looks so over it.’
Accusing Norway of only donating half a present, one person tweeted: ‘Trafalgar Square. Thank you Norway for donating half a tree. Again.’

Someone else on Twitter posted the image of a tree next to a photograph of actor Scarlett Johanson crying and wrote: ‘If the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree were a person.’
Another user joked: ‘Ok, own up, who switched out the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree for one from Wish mid-journey?’
However, the tree did have some defenders – with Westminster council’s deputy leader Tim Roca saying it was ‘a wonderful gesture of friendship’.
Mr Roca added: ‘Perhaps we should stop knocking it just because it doesn’t look like it’s out of Disney.’
