The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has reported a tragic mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, located in the rural community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed that nine individuals lost their lives, including the shooter, who died from a self-inflicted wound.

Among the victims, six were found within the school premises, while another succumbed to injuries en route to the hospital. Additionally, two more victims were discovered at a nearby residence. The CBC noted that 25 people sustained injuries, with two critically wounded individuals being airlifted for urgent medical care.

In a virtual briefing, North District Chief Superintendent Ken Floyd explained that an active shooter alert was issued for Tumbler Ridge Secondary School early in the afternoon. The alert described the suspect as a woman with brown hair, wearing a dress. The school, which educates fewer than 200 students, became the center of a devastating event.

Our hearts are in Tumbler Ridge tonight with the families of those who have lost loved ones.

Government will ensure every possible support for community members in the coming days, as we all try to come to terms with this unimaginable tragedy.

Chief Supt. Floyd assured that all the remaining students and staff were safely evacuated from the school and the situation was stable. B.C. Premier Eby has scheduled an address to the community at 9:00 p.m. MT.

The shooting at the small, rural high school today is the second deadliest school shooting in Canadian history, behind the massacre that left 14 dead at L’Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989.

Five people were killed in a series of shootings in La Loche, Sask., on Jan. 22, 2016, including two at a community school.

The Tumbler Ridge School District will close both its elementary and secondary schools for the rest of the week.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted the following statement to X:

I am devastated by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones to these horrific acts of violence.

I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens.

Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other.

I have connected with Premier Eby to express my condolences, and with the Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, who is coordinating the federal response.

Our officials are in close contact with their counterparts to ensure the community is fully supported as best we can. The Government of Canada stands with all British Columbians as they confront this horrible tragedy.
