Trump Highlights Claims of ‘Unusual Patterns’ in Midterm Elections

President Donald Trump has triggered a new backlash after sharing posts that questioned the results of the midterm elections, including Democrat James Talarico’s decisive victory in Texas—just days after saying he would accept the outcome.

On Saturday, Trump promoted claims about supposedly “unusual” voting patterns, sharp growth in Democratic support and election-night results that some conservative commentators described as hard to accept.

Several charts and messages shared on Truth Social appeared to challenge the scale of the Democrats’ sweeping victories, which resulted in Republicans losing control of both chambers of Congress.

None of the material, however, offered evidence of fraud or other election misconduct.

The posts represented a sharp departure from Tuesday night, when Trump told The New York Times that he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results and cooperate with the incoming Democratic majorities.

One of the most contentious posts focused on Talarico’s overwhelming defeat of Trump-endorsed Republican Ken Paxton in the Texas Senate race.

Trump reposted a message from an account named The Lone Raccoon showing a graph of the candidates’ vote totals as they rose during election night, including several abrupt increases.

The chart drew attention to sudden gains in the Democratic candidate’s total, although large jumps are possible when election officials report sizable batches of counted ballots.

Trump shared a post challenging Democrat James Talarico’s Texas victory, displaying election-night vote totals and asking: “Does anyone believe this at all?”

Talarico’s win ranked among the election’s biggest surprises and made him the first Democrat elected to the Senate from Texas since 1988.

The 37-year-old former teacher defeated Paxton by roughly 12 percentage points in a state Trump had carried comfortably only two years earlier.

Paxton has conceded the contest and offered congratulations to his Democratic rival.

Trump also shared another message portraying Democratic support nationwide as an extraordinary surge.

The post, first published by Kevin Bass, claimed: “Republican votes stayed the same. Democrats materialized 20 million new votes.”

A bar chart accompanying the message compared the House popular vote in the 2022 and 2026 elections.

According to the chart, Republicans received 54.2 million votes in 2022, compared with a projected 55.6 million in 2026.

The Democratic total, by contrast, was shown rising from 51.3 million votes in 2022 to a projected 70.4 million in 2026.

Importantly, the 2026 figures were estimates based on the assumption that only 85 percent of ballots had been counted, rather than completed election totals.

An independent review concluded that the claim of 20 million additional Democratic votes was misleading and that the eventual increase was likely to be substantially lower.

A third post shared by Trump questioned what it described as unusually strong Democratic turnout in Texas, where Republican Governor Greg Abbott was defeated by Gina Hinojosa.

Written by Donald Ward, the message pointed out that Abbott had increased his vote total compared with his successful reelection campaign in 2022.

Hinojosa, however, received about 1.7 million more votes than Democratic candidate Beto O’Rourke secured four years earlier.

“Those are Looney Tunes numbers,” Ward wrote.

He further claimed that Hinojosa received 400,000 more votes in Texas than Kamala Harris won during the 2024 presidential election.

“These are not normal midterms numbers,” he added. “Not a single opinion poll before the elections came close to predicting this.”

Ward argued that such turnout should have produced extremely long lines at polling stations.

Yet differences between election years do not, by themselves, demonstrate irregularities, and the post provided no evidence that ballots had been counted improperly.

Another message reposted by Trump pointed to what it described as unusually uniform Democratic gains across several states and called for closer examination of ballot totals, voter records and turnout figures.

“A pattern this even demands answers at the ballot level,” the post stated, urging hand counts and reviews of voter-registration records.

The burst of online activity came fewer than four days after Trump appeared prepared to acknowledge the Republicans’ devastating defeat.

“I am absolutely willing to accept those results,” he told The New York Times in a telephone interview Tuesday night.

“We’ll work with the Democrats, and we’ll, you know, look forward to working with them. We’ll probably work something out.”

Trump attributed some of the Republican losses to his absence from the ballot, suggesting that his own popularity might have benefited vulnerable candidates.

He also said he had no regrets about backing defeated Republicans, including Paxton and South Carolina Senator Darline Graham.

Trump’s latest posts have raised doubts about whether he will continue taking a conciliatory approach as Democrats prepare to take control of Congress.

The Democratic victories will give the party greater authority to investigate his administration and potentially obstruct key elements of his legislative agenda.
