Trump Voters Have Different Priorities than Reagan-Bush Republicans

Vice President JD Vance attributed some of the internal rifts within the Republican Party to shifts catalyzed by President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. He shared these insights during a policy discussion hosted by Breitbart News in Washington, DC, on Thursday.

“We are witnessing the emergence of a new governing and political coalition,” Vance explained to Matthew Boyle, the Washington bureau chief for Breitbart. “Many individuals who previously did not support the Republican Party are now part of it, bringing with them distinct perspectives on certain issues compared to those held by the supporters of Ronald Reagan or George W. Bush.”

Vance further noted, “The party under Donald Trump represents a novel force in American politics, one with the potential to govern effectively for decades to come. However, the divisions we face are a natural result of welcoming many working-class voters who are unconcerned with Republican ideals from a quarter-century ago.”

He emphasized that the expanding Republican base is steering the party in new directions, a shift that future leaders should embrace as they unite to counteract what he described as “civilizational threats” posed by the far left.

“Engaging in this debate is both natural and necessary,” Vance remarked, “especially as we recognize that our primary challenge lies in confronting the far left.”

Vance discussed a host of other topics about the work the second Trump White House has accomplished since retaking office in January, as well as the administration’s goals for both the near term and the next three years of governance.

The event, held in partnership with CGCN and the ALFA Institute, is the latest in a series of talks with members of the Trump administration.
