This announcement follows New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s approval of a bill last month that prohibits ICE agents from wearing masks in the state and restricts local law enforcement from collaborating with ICE. The legislation also empowers New Yorkers to pursue legal action against federal officials who allegedly breach immigration protocols.
The Trump administration’s senior immigration officials contend that the focus should be on apprehending migrants already detained in local jails, as opposed to conducting community-wide crackdowns similar to those previously executed in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Earlier this year, the White House faced significant criticism for its aggressive enforcement actions in urban areas. This anticipated escalation in ICE operations coincides with Trump’s plans to make a rare visit to his hometown, attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. Previously, Homan played a key role in concluding the contentious Homeland Security crackdown in Minneapolis, which had sparked outrage following the tragic deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Additionally, nearby New Jersey has seen persistent protests for weeks outside an immigration detention center, underscoring the heightened tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the region.
Delaney Hall Protest Sparks Nationwide Attention
Hundreds of anti-ICE demonstrators have maintained a presence outside Delaney Hall, a 1,000-bed ICE detention center in Newark. Protesters have often battled with law enforcement and agents with tear gas, pepper spray, and brawls. Footage of dozens of protesters being arrested has circulated online as the facility becomes the latest flashpoint for opposition to Trump’s immigration crackdown. The Trump administration also announced on Monday it was attempting to revoke the citizenship of 17 US citizens the White House has accused of immigration fraud, according to CBS News.
