Claire McCaskill, a contributor for MS NOW, expressed on Monday’s episode of “Deadline” her concern that the Supreme Court is effectively elevating President Donald Trump to a king-like status.
Reflecting on her early years in the Senate when President Bush was in office, McCaskill recalled the nominations of conservative judges. “During my first two years, I observed the nomination of individuals with deeply conservative values,” she explained. “The focus for conservatives was typically on a strict interpretation of the law, emphasizing adherence to the legislative intent and avoiding the creation of new laws.”
McCaskill criticized the current Supreme Court’s actions, suggesting that their legacy will be defined by enabling Trump’s administration. “This court is empowering a president to wield unprecedented power, engaging in reckless actions without accountability,” she argued. “If Chief Justice Roberts hopes for his legacy to be remembered for anything beyond their actions concerning Donald Trump, he’s mistaken. This isn’t an academic debate about the founders’ intentions. The founders explicitly opposed the idea of a monarchy. By their actions, the court is granting Trump king-like powers, contrary to both the law and the Constitution.”
