Oui can do it

A LONG overdue ban on illegal migrants being housed in five star hotels was announced by the Government.

Immigration minister Robert Jenrick also told MPs moves have already begun to deport foreign nationals who have spread hate in this country.

Both crackdowns are welcome.

But a lesson in really getting tough on illegal migrants came from across the Channel.

In a move that will send shockwaves through the EU, France is now considering taking on meddling judges at the European Court of Human Rights.

It wants to ignore ECHR rulings on foreign criminals and deport them anyway. Something that this newspaper has been calling for Britain to do since well before Brexit.

France reckons paying a fine to the court for bypassing a faceless Euro judge is a price worth paying to rid the country of terrorists and killers who want to do French nationals real harm.

Voters here would surely agree.

The UK should be emboldened and consider following suit.

Because if our Supreme Court rules against the Rwanda scheme — which remains a depressing possibility — then the Government needs options.

France has not so far been overly helpful in stopping the small boats.

But this time they might just be on to something.

Shirker shock

BRITAIN, it seems, is falling out of love with work.

Since the Covid pandemic millions have dropped out of the economy.

Another 250,000 over 50s have now stopped working, either sick or retired.

But how can a working population that is getting smaller keep paying for millions to sit at home on benefits?

Work and Pensions Secretary Mel Stride is right to get parents on Universal Credit to spend more time looking for work.

The Tories under David Cameron understood that trapping people on benefits and into poverty doesn’t help them as individuals — and damages the economy.

Unless we put the strivers before the shirkers we are doomed.

Worlds apart

WITH one simple word Israeli hostage Yocheved Lifshitz displayed more humanity than the monsters of Hamas ever will.

Raising her hand and saying “Shalom” (peace) to her captors was an extraordinary gesture for an 85-year-old woman who had been kidnapped and beaten.

But for all the joy at her release we must remember the remaining 200 hostages living in fear of execution.

Nor should the world forget Hamas’s unimaginable cruelty.
