A SHOOTER is on the loose after killing one person and injuring another at the University of New Mexico early Friday morning.
Police told students to shelter in place and avoid campus as they hunt the suspect.
Cops received reports of gunshots at around 3 am at a student housing center at the school’s flagship Albuquerque campus, the University of New Mexico said.
When officers responded to the scene at Casas del Rio, they found two victims shot.
One person died while the other sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
The suspect is still at large and may still be on campus, the University of New Mexico Police Department said.
The university closed the central campus and told students to stay where they are.
An alert announcing the shelter-in-place went out on social media at 6:17 am.
“Out of an abundance of caution, UNM has closed its Albuquerque central campus,” school officials said.
“The Health Sciences Center, including all clinical components remains open.”
UNMPD didn’t immediately return The U.S. Sun’s request for comment.
UNM directed The U.S. Sun to New Mexico State Police, who didn’t immediately return a request for comment.
Students were encouraged to stay up to date on alerts by using the school’s app or keeping an eye out on social media.
Multiple law enforcement agencies were at the scene on Friday morning.
Crime scene tape was seen sectioning off an area outside the volleyball courts near the student apartments.
Cops are actively investigating the incident and ask anyone with information to call UNMPD.
UNM is a public university and has the largest student population of any university in the state, with over 22,000 students enrolled in 2023.
Casas del Rio, located on Central Campus, can house 1,030 students, according to Lobo Development Corporation.Â
The complex has four fully-furnished buildings with two-bedroom apartments.
The school’s main campus sprawls across 800 acres, located a mile east of downtown Albuquerque.
2022 SHOOTING
More than two years ago, another shooting on campus killed a 19-year-old student and injured a college basketball player.
At around 3 am on November 19, 2022, an early morning shootout occurred between four UNM students and 21-year-old New Mexico State University basketball player Mike Peake, cops said at the time.
Peake was in town for a basketball game between rival schools, NMSU and UNM.
UNM student Brandon Travis, 19, was killed in the gunfight.
