Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared before the Senate Finance Committee on Thursday to talk about President Trump’s reconciliation bill and how it affects taxes and economic policy overall.
On Wednesday, as we wrote, it was the House Ways and Means Committee’s turn to hear from him and during part of the back-and-forth, the cabinet secretary had the misfortune of tangling with one Dem representative who accused him of sexism. He was also questioned by Stacey Plaskett, the delegate from the Virgin Islands, which my colleague Nick Arama described as an “encounter with a crazy aftermath”:
Bessent politely tells her she’s incorrect….Plaskett tries to scold him like he’s a child. This isn’t the way you’re supposed to be responding to a Cabinet secretary.
“When you come to someone’s house, you respect their rules. And in this house, we don’t interrupt individuals. And you’re not going to interrupt my time,” she railed.
The “aftermath” came later on Wednesday afternoon, when Bessent reminded everyone who follows his X account what’s truly important–getting the facts straight and out to the American people.
This is not my house—nor is it @StaceyPlaskett’s. This is the People’s House.
And the people deserve to hear the facts. pic.twitter.com/1m4uUdDdQM
