SHOPPERS are learning that Walmart employees watching over self-checkout lanes may be keeping a closer eye on customers than most people realize.

Self-checkout lanes have become a hot topic of debate for Walmart shoppers — and not everybody likes them.

Thousands of Walmart customers have taken to social media to voice their support for the quick and easy machines.

But many other shoppers have shared their complaints about having to do the work of checking out themselves or being falsely accused of stealing.

And because Walmart and other major retailers have reported billions of dollars in losses due to theft in recent years, many stores have been amping up their security strategies — including at self-checkout.

At Walmart, this means that store associates watching over self-checkout can actually observe and control your transaction remotely.

The secret was shared by PinkyStache (@pinkystache) in a short TikTok video.

“You’ve been warned,” the video started.

Viewers are shown a short clip of a self-checkout lane at Walmart.

“Walmart employees can remotely pause transactions at self-checkout registers,” the text on the video continued.

But associates should only interfere with your purchase if one condition is met, PinkyStache said.

“If they suspect you are stealing.”

The TikTok video has been liked over 1,000 times and received dozens of comments slamming the setup.

“Sooo… they hire people to watch self-[checkout] registers, but can’t hire people to run a register? Make it make sense,” William Webb880 (@williamwebb61) commented.

“They can do that but they can’t check you out,” another added.

“Maybe do your job then instead of watching untrained people do it,” a third wrote.
