A SYDNEY couple have been left heartbroken are discovering a huge “unattractive” and permanent green box outside their dream home.

They noticed the “eyesore” transformer box had been installed by their front windows during a routine check of their property, which is currently under construction.

They later revealed they had made the “rookie error” of not paying attention to the land survey before purchasing the site.

A friend of the couple shared the dilemma online and asked her community for help: “I am helping a friend with a property her husband signed up on.

“She went and inspected the property as it is nearing completion – and saw this green transformer box built in front of the house and very close to its front window.

“Does this pose a health risk and a safety hazard? Does this impact property value? Is there anything they can do about it?”

Property expert Adam Flynn confirmed any permanent fixture in a person’s front yard could cause their property to drop in value by up to 10 per cent.

Green electrical transformer boxes are designed and installed to safely supply homes with underground electrical power.

They come with various landscaping restrictions which will prevent the couple from covering theirs with plants or greenery.

Mr Flynn, of Coronis Real Estate Group, told Femail: “It’s like a telegraph pole being in someone’s front yard – you can negotiate why you want to pay $50,000 or $70,000 less for the house because of it.

“The worst part is it can’t be moved – it’s 100 per cent there even if you cover it with a tool shed or paint it another colour.”

He noted that while the box was lawfully installed in a “common area”, “anyone looking at it from the street is going to think it’s unattractive”.

Social media users were largely sympathetic to the couple’s situation.

One person said: “I think the best you can do is put a privacy screen up or try and see if you can have plants around the area.”

Another wrote: “They’re meant to be quite safe and don’t make noise, but it is an eyesore.”

In other home news, a man who listed his property on Airbnb for one night allegedly had to deal with a guest who wrecked the place, stayed for three months, and rented it to other people.

South Philadelphia landlord Joseph Foresta filed a lawsuit against Airbnb in March 2020.

It stated the person who booked an evening at his property ended up staying for three months and caused significant damage, reported the Pennsylvania Record.

And a DIYer has found a way to make her home a little more glamorous by adding a touch of gold to her light switches.

Dismayed by the estimated price of $11 per gold cover, lifestyle influencer Aly McDaniel took matters into her own hands.

She used a metallic finish spray to paint her existing white outlet plates, switch plates, and screws gold, creating a luxury feel.
