DOZENS of tenants have been left scrambling to find a new place to live after they received a 24 hour eviction notice.

This came after officials deemed the Canterbury Village apartment complex in North Providence, Rhode Island, unlivable due to exposed asbestos and structural problems in a communal hallway.

“When we got there, what we saw was deplorable,” North Providence Assistant Fire Chief John Horan told WPRI.

“It’s just not a safe environment at all.”

The issues reportedly began in February when a pipe burst inside the building, Mayor Charlie Lombardi told the outlet.

“We couldn’t get them to cooperate,” he said of Vista Management, the company that owns the complex.

“We had to take them to court, and then they agreed to hire an architect, but they still haven’t done that.

“This decision wasn’t easy, but God forbid something happened.”

Residents received the eviction notice on Monday and had until 3pm on Tuesday to vacate their homes.

But some described that as a herculean task.

“It’s just not feasible,” resident Janet Clark told WPRI as she choked back tears.

“Even if you could find a moving company, it wouldn’t happen in 24 hours.”

Richard Wessen, who’s lived at Canterbury Village for three years, echoed that sentiment.

“In my opinion, this is very inhumane,” he said.

The fire department has brought the American Red Cross to assist residents.

Lombardi claimed Vista Management is entirely to blame for the situation.

“Let me be blunt… They should be arrested,” he said.

“This isn’t right and it’s not fair, but the town can’t just sit back and allow this to happen.”

The U.S. Sun was unable to reach Vista Management, whose office is located less than two miles from Canterbury Village.

Franklin Square Management, a related company which shares a website with Vista, didn’t immediately respond to the outlet’s request for comment.
