Before Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife and son, he was a highly successful lawyer, and now true crime enthusiasts want to know more about his net worth.

Who is Alex Murdaugh?

Alex Murdaugh is a convicted criminal from Hampton County, South Carolina.

Once a highly successful lawyer, he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in political science and later a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1990.

In 1994, Alex was admitted to the South Carolina Bar, and he quickly became known for “representing injured people in all areas of personal injury law, including trucking cases, products liability and wrongful death.”

He also served as a part-time prosecutor for the 14th Judicial Circuit.

Despite all his success, his legal empire came crashing down on September 3, 2021, when he announced that he would be resigning from his family’s law firm and entering rehab.

The law firm, Peters, Murdaugh, Parker, Eltzroth, and Detrick (PMPED), which was founded by his great-grandfather more than 100 years ago, disclosed to The New York Times that he was forced out after he allegedly misused money from the company.

His downfall continued after he was shot in the head and accused of murdering his wife and son.

A few weeks later, on September 6, 2021, he was arrested in connection to an insurance fraud scheme that court documents said involved him arranging for his own killing so his surviving son, Buster, could collect the life insurance payout.

In a statement, that did not address the shooting, Alex said, “The murders of my wife and son have caused an incredibly difficult time in my life.”

“I have made a lot of decisions that I truly regret.”

“I’m resigning from my law firm and entering rehab after a long battle that has been exacerbated by these murders.”

Then, in July 2022, he was charged with killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, and later found guilty by a jury.

Despite a guilty verdict, he has continuously denied having any role in their deaths.

He has the support of his older son Buster, who told Fox Nation in August 2023 that he believes his father is innocent.

“I do not think that he could be affiliated with endangering my mother and brother,” Buster told Martha MacCallum, via People.

“We have been here for a while now and that’s been my stance.”

In September 2023, Murdaugh and his attorneys accused county clerk Rebecca Hill of tampering with the jury and sought a retrial.

In documents filed in court, they claimed Hill persuaded jurors to return a guilty verdict “to secure for herself a book deal and media appearances that would not happen in the event of a mistrial.”

“Hill betrayed her oath of office for money and fame,” the filings continued.

A judge denied the new trial on January 29, 2024, after determining that Hill’s actions did not impact the verdict in the original case.
