Americans planning trips to Mexico might need to rethink their travel arrangements as tensions rise following the death of a major cartel leader. The U.S. State Department has issued warnings about potential dangers in several Mexican states after the Mexican military killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” the formidable head of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

El Mencho’s demise has sparked chaos, particularly in Puerto Vallarta, a favored destination for tourists. The typically vibrant city found itself shrouded in smoke from burning vehicles, with major roads blocked, leaving travelers stranded and anxious at airports. The ensuing panic saw highways closed for hours as violence erupted in response to the cartel leader’s death.

In light of the violent upheaval, both Mexican and international authorities have advised citizens to remain indoors. The U.S. State Department has restricted travel to certain areas of Mexico, urging Americans to reconsider their visits until the situation stabilizes.
