Who was Arne Cheyenne Johnson’s wife, Debbie Glatzel?

When Arne killed Alan Bono, he was in a relationship with Debbie Glatzel.

Debbie, who passed away in 2021 after a battle with cancer, was the sister of David Glatzel.

In 1980, it was believed that David, then 11 years old, had been possessed by a demon, and Arne claimed that he too became possessed while helping perform an exorcism on his girlfriend’s brother, according to Newsweek.

“I yelled at this thing to the top of my lungs,” Arne recalled in the Netflix documentary, The Devil on Trial, via Time.

“I said, ‘Leave this little kid alone. Take me on. I’m here. Take me on.’ I felt this coldness come over me, ice cold. [The paranormal investigator] said, ‘Oh my God, what did you do?’”

The following year, Arne stabbed his landlord 22 times, a crime he alleged was committed while he was under the influence of the devil.

Arne’s lawyers argued that he was not responsible due to the alleged paranormal influence, however, a court threw out the defense and he was convicted of first-degree manslaughter.

When did Arne and Debbie get married?

Despite the heinous allegations against him, Debbie stood by Arne’s side through it all and they went on to get married.

Arnie and Debbie tied the knot in 1985, a year before he was released from prison for good behavior, and they stayed together up until her 2021 passing.

At this time, details of their marriage are unclear because they often stayed out of the spotlight.

How many kids did they have?

Throughout the course of Arne’s marriage, he welcomed two children with Debbie.

Details on Arne’s kids are unclear because, like their mother, they also stay out of the spotlight.

Is The Devil on Trial based on a true story?

Arne’s case is unique because it marked the first time in US history that someone tried to use demonic possession as a defense in a murder trial.

As a result, the case has continued to fascinate true crime enthusiasts, and in October 2023, it will be brought to life in the Netflix documentary, The Devil on Trial.

The documentary recounts the “brutal crime that led to this unprecedented legal strategy” and incorporates “firsthand accounts, fictional reenactments, and actual recordings of alleged devil possession,” according to Tudum.

Prior to the release of the documentary, director Chris Holt revealed that everything viewers will see is completely authentic.

“There are people who tell lies,” Holt explained. “But I sat down with David and Arne and Alan and Carl, for hours on end, and their stories never changed.

“I think they were telling me the truth — but it’s their interpretations of the truth rather than it being a hardened fact. But they believed — and I believed — what they were saying is truthful.”

The Devil on Trial can be streamed on Netflix starting October 17, 2023.
