RESIDENTS in Salem, Massachusets were shaken up after a college freshman was found dead near his campus.
Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker said that the college student died shortly before 1:30 am on November 1, 2023.
Who was Carl-Hens Beliard?
Carl-Hens Beliard was an 18-year-old college student living in the Salem area.
A graduate of Worcester North High School, he was a standout athlete on the school’s championship-winning basketball team.
He has since been remembered for being a “kind individual” and an “accomplished athlete.”
“Carl was a hardworking, kind individual whose life was taken too soon,” Worcester Mayor Joe Petty said in a statement posted on Facebook and Instagram.
Worcester Superintendent Rachel Monárrez also released a statement, saying: “Carl was an accomplished athlete whose life ended just as it was just beginning. I cannot imagine the pain of the student’s family.”
At this time, additional details on Carl’s personal life are unclear because he often stayed out of the spotlight and off social media.

What was his cause of death?
Police discovered Carl’s body in a car that was parked on the sidewalk of Forest Avenue, according to CBS News.
Authorities noticed that he had been shot, and he was quickly transported to Salem Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Carl’s death is still being investigated by police and no arrests have been made as of this writing.

Which school did Carl-Hens Beliard go to?
After Carl graduated from Worcester North High School, he began taking classes at Salem State University.
He was a member of the school’s basketball team but did not get a chance to play for the Vikings because his death came just days before their season opener.
“As both the Salem State president and a college dad, this tragedy is heartbreaking for all in our community and every parent’s worst nightmare,” Salem State President John Keenan said in a statement, via CBS News.
Salem State University is a public college in Massachusetts that is home to more than 6,500 students.
