World Cup: FOX News mistakenly tweets out that the USA has ADVANCED to the knockout stages.

While a 0-0 draw for the United States against England can be seen as a positive result, one American media company thought things were much better than they actually were for the USMNT.

In a now-deleted tweet, FOX News erroneously tweeted out that the United States had advanced to the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup. 

FOX News is a subsidiary of FOX Corporation – which also owns FOX Sports, the rights holder for the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

While the draw did not sink the United States, it left them in a position of needing to beat Iran

The USA impressed against the Three Lions and arguably had the better chances with Christian Pulisic smashing a strike against the crossbar in a gripping affair at the Qatar World Cup.

They secured a shutout against a team that hit six past Iran in their Group B opener Monday but with two points from two games the work is not done. 

With the draw, the United States put themselves in a clear position with control of their own destiny.

In order to advance, the USMNT have to beat Iran. Any other result would see them finish third in the group at best.

As for their opponents, Iran also needs a win to ward off any results from Wales in their match against England.

If the USMNT even draws Iran, they will not make it out of Group B – and finish 3rd at best

If Iran and the United States draw, and Wales defeated England, Wales would hop both teams to claim second in the group.

Fox News’ sister subsidiary  FOX Sports, which has the sole English-language rights to the tournament in the US, has also come under fire for gaffes of its own. 

Its coverage of Denmark’s opening Group D game against Tunisia joined the second half late, leaving US soccer fans furious. 

The broadcaster had cut to a commercial break towards the end of halftime but had run over, joining the second half 14 seconds in. 

Due to cutting to the live feed of the game late, the channel almost missed Tunisia finding the back of the net.

FOX Sports also faced criticism on Day 2 of the tournament ahead of the USA’s Group B rivals England’s game against Iran. 

Fox was broadcasting its pre-match buildup ahead of The Three Lions’ clash with Iran, which it went on to win emphatically 6-2, as part of its double-header before Gregg Berhalter’s team kicked off at 2pm ET.

However, its live feed went dark multiple times, including when it cut to commentators Ian Darke and USMNT legend Landon Donovan for their pre-match analysis. 

Soccer supporters who had gotten up early to watch the 8am ET game were quick to rip into the broadcaster, branding it ‘Mickey Mouse’ coverage.
