Seven other people were harmed, including the defense for the champion Club Atletico Independiente of Panama, in the attack in the dangerous seaport of Colon.

He was murdered in a port where drug cartels fight.

Hernandez is the second player from Panama to die in the city in the previous six years.

As two gangs compete for control of drug-smuggling routes, murder rates in the area have increased.

It is unknown at this time if Hernandez was singled out for attack or why.

On Sunday afternoon local time, two armed men forced a cab driver to take them to a building in Colon’s Barrio Norte neighborhood.

Then they opened fire on a gathering of people nearby.

The two armed men fled, but a suspect was detained near the awful scene in a flat.

COLON’S PLACE IN DRUG WARS

The settlement is located 50 miles north of Panama settlement, where ships use the Panama Canal to enter or leave the Caribbean Sea.

In the 300,000-person Colon province of Panama, there were 102 murders last year.

Government statistics show that there were nine fewer cases than the previous year.

Authorities attribute a large portion of the violence to rivalry among drug trafficking gangs.

He also exhorted the youth of the city to “stop the violence”.

He urged authorities to “launch projects to save the youth from this violence,” but he also urged them to do more to assist young people.

Amilcar Henriquez, a midfielder, was fatally shot in the Colon province six years before to Hernandez’s passing.

He was a member of the first-ever qualifying Panama team for the 2018 World Cup.

In a city with only 40,000 residents, more than 50 individuals have been killed this year.

Colon is attractive for drug smugglers as it is next to the Caribbean Sea and close to the Atlantic entrance to the Panama Canal.

Who Was Gilberto Hernández

 

Gilberto Hernández Bultrón was born on 26 June 1997 was a Panamanian professional footballer who played as a centre-back.

He played for Arabe Unido, Herrera F.C., and C.A. Independiente and made 105 appearances in the Liga Panamá de Ftbol. He received two starts for the national team of Panama.

On September 3, 2023, two men arrived in a taxi and opened fire on a street in Colón Province, killing Hernández and injuring six other people.

The shooting was probably connected to a gang conflict that was present in Colón.

Club career

In a match at the Estadio Agustin Sánchez versus San Francisco F.C., Hernández made his rabe Unido debut.

Hernández signed with Herrera F.C. on January 4, 2022, following several seasons with rabe Unido. On March 27, he faced Plaza Amador in his club debut.

Hernández joined C.A. Independiente on June 8, 2022. At the Estadio Agustin Muquita Sánchez on June 27, he played his first game for the team against Veraguas United FC.

During the 2022 Clausura and 2023 Apertura seasons, he was the club’s champion. At the Estadio Rommel Fernández, during the 2023 CONCACAF Central American Cup, he played his final game on August 23, 2023, defeating Real Estel 3-1.

The Panama U-22 team selected Hernández to compete in the 2019 Pan American Games. On March 12, 2023, in a friendly matchup against Guatemala, he made his senior team debut.
