Billy Sharp, the captain of Sheffield United, was attacked and assaulted by a fan who head-butted and knocked him on the ground after the full-time whistle of the match between Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest. He was left bloodied and required stitches.

The Nottinghamshire police have since launched an investigation. Sharp had been an unwitting spectator at the time of the incident and had not even played in the game because he was injured. Those closest to him were shocked and outraged after the 36-year-old was headbutted by a fan.

“The Club will engage with the authorities to track down the individual and hold them accountable for their actions, which will include a lifetime ban from Nottingham Forest,” Forest said in a statement.

“Investigations are underway to identify the perpetrator, and we will make an arrest as soon as possible,” Nottinghamshire police assistant chief constable Rob Griffin said.
