Sandy Koufax was born on December 30, 1935, and was raised by parents Evelyn and Jack Braun. When he was three years old, his parents separated. When he was nine years old, his mother got married again to Irving Koufax.
The family relocated to the Rockville Centre neighborhood of Long Island soon after his mother’s second marriage. Before entering the ninth grade, Koufax’s family relocated back to Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst neighborhood.
Although he is best known now for his legendary baseball achievements, he was a basketball star in his school years. After he turned fifteen and joined a youth baseball league, there was no turning back. In 1955, he made his MLB debut as a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
