According to a criminal complaint filed on October 27 in Minnesota’s 4th Judicial District Court, Sam Brinton, who began working as the DOE’s deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition in June, is accused of stealing a bag from the baggage claim area at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
A DOE spokesperson declined to comment via email on Monday. Brinton did not respond immediately to a request for comment, nor did Fabian Hoffner, a Minneapolis lawyer who represents Brinton.

Sam Brinton, a senior Energy Department (DOE) official, was accused of stealing a traveler’s luggage at the Minneapolis airport in September, just before secretly taking a leave of absence.
Brinton, the DOE’s deputy assistant secretary for spent fuel and waste disposition, is accused of stealing a Vera Bradley suitcase valued at $2,325 from the luggage carousel at Minneapolis St. Paul Airport (MSP) on September 16, according to a criminal complaint filed on October 26 in Minnesota state court and obtained by Fox News Digital.
Brinton had driven to MSP from Washington, D.C. that day.

Brinton is accused of stealing another person’s luggage and could spend up to five years in prison and pay a $10,000 fine.
According to court documents, after the suitcase owner called the Police, officers looked over footage of the luggage carousel. They saw Brinton taking the suitcase before taking off its owner-identifying tag.
Law enforcement saw Brinton using the luggage on at least two additional trips to Washington, D.C., on September 18 and October 9.

When a Police officer called to discuss the incident, Brinton denied stealing anything. Brinton acknowledged still having the bag.
Sam told the officer that if he had taken the wrong bag, he would be happy to return it, but he didn’t have any clothes for another person. When he opened the bag, he revealed that those were his clothes.
Brinton apologized for not being “completely honest” in a follow-up call to the officer two hours after the initial call. However, Brinton admitted that it was a mistake and said he had chosen the incorrect bag at the carousel because he was tired.
The court documents stated that the defendant claimed they discovered the bag was not theirs when they opened it at the hotel. DEFENDANT claimed they had left the bag of clothing in the hotel room’s drawers.
Brinton was ultimately accused of felony theft of movable property without consent, which carries a potential sentence of five years in prison, a fine of $10,000, or both.
