In a delightful twist of events, acclaimed actress Carey Mulligan found herself postponing a significant royal honor due to her husband’s bustling schedule. The talented star, known for her role in “The Great Gatsby,” was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by King Charles during a ceremony at Windsor Castle this past March.
Originally, the prestigious event was slated for 2025, but Mulligan opted to delay it for a year. Her decision came from a desire to share the memorable moment with her husband, Marcus Mumford, the frontman of Mumford and Sons, whose commitments kept him from attending the initial date.

In a candid conversation on Deadline.com’s video series, “The Actor’s Side,” Mulligan shed light on the situation. “It was announced two New Years ago. So I knew obviously that it was happening, and they offer you dates to go and do it,” she explained. “I couldn’t do any of them last year, so this was finally when I could go and actually receive it.”
The irony of the situation wasn’t lost on Mulligan. “I wasn’t that busy – it was my husband,” she admitted with a smile. “Marcus was really busy last year, and I kept on getting a date, and he was like, ‘I’m on tour’ or ‘I’m doing press’. And I was like, ‘I want to get my CBE!’”
This charming anecdote highlights the balancing act many couples face while juggling personal accomplishments and professional demands. It also serves as a heartfelt reminder of the importance of sharing life’s significant milestones with loved ones, even when it means waiting a little longer for the perfect moment.
“I obviously wanted him to be there so it was Marcus’ availability that was the problem last year. But now I have it.”
Carey also revealed attendees at the ceremony don’t find out which member of the royal family will be handing out the honours until they there – and she was thrilled to receive her medal from King Charles.
She said: “You don’t know who is going to give it to you – it could be Prince William or Princess Anne or the King. You find out as you walk in who you’ve got … I got the King …
“As you walk in they said: ‘Ladies and gentleman, today we have the King’ and we all went [gasp]. Any of them [members of the royal family] are great, I’m not knocking any of them they’re all fantastic, but it was incredible [to have the King].
“Very surreal and I feel like I saw everything in technicolour and was in a bit of a dream world but it was really exciting.”
