Alan Shearer has weighed in on the ongoing turbulence at Liverpool, suggesting that the club might only find peace if either Mohamed Salah or manager Arne Slot steps aside.
The football community was rocked over the weekend when Salah openly criticized the club, implying that he felt scapegoated amid Liverpool’s recent struggles on the field.
In a bold revelation, Salah declared that he shares ‘no relationship’ with his manager, a statement that coincided with him being omitted from the squad for Liverpool’s Champions League encounter against Inter Milan on Tuesday night.
Speaking on Prime Video, former Newcastle striker Shearer expressed skepticism about the situation being salvageable, stating, “I would be really surprised if there was a way back. It seems to me that either Salah or the manager has to leave.”
Shearer further noted, “As a manager, you have the prerogative to bench any player, but ultimately, you must deliver victories, especially when leaving out a star like Salah.”

The former Newcastle man admitted he feels empathy for Salah after experiencing a similar situation
Shearer also said: ‘I want to speak about the mentality of him, what he has done, and he will be embarrassed, hurt, he has an ego that has been damaged. He will look at what he has done and achieved and think he has carried the club for eight years, won everything he can win. Without him that would not have happened.
‘From his point of view, that all comes in to the equation. He will think other players are playing poorly and are still playing and he will think he has taken the brunt of it. Sometimes you have to accept that when you are a superstar like him.’
Daniel Sturridge, meanwhile, admitted that his ‘friend’ had gone about things the wrong way.
The former Reds forward played for the club alongside Salah from 2017 and 2019, and the duo have retained a strong relationship off-the-pitch since.
‘I think it is not getting on the pitch that has made him do this,’ Sturridge said. ‘There was probably an element of surprise for him.
‘I am disappointed in my friend. The reaction is so poor. It is terrible the way he has done it. He can come good again, we are viewing this in a moment of craziness.’
Shearer did, though, also tackle things from Salah’s point of view. The former forward endured a similar situation when he clashed with former Magpies boss Ruud Gullit in 1999.
He also suggested that Slot should have taken an alternative approach to dealing with the outspoken Salah ahead of the Champions League tie.

It is up in the air if Salah will play for Liverpool again as he prepares to head to the Africa Cup of Nations next week
‘He is not correct in what he said to the media,’ Shearer said. ‘He should keep that in the dressing room or manager’s office and tell him face to face, not to the media. But he will think, “Hang on, we are away at Leeds and you are not bringing me on”.
‘I had a similar situation, I had all of those things. I felt i was a huge part of Newcastle, I felt huge anger when I was left out and how it was done but it is not right when you go to the world’s press and tell them, but that is how he is feeling.
‘When you have done as much as he haha, I do look at him and think I understand but I don’t agree with how he has gone about it.
‘If I was a manager handling this very difficult situation, I think a great way to deal with it would have been to get him in Sunday and say, “This is not good for you or me, we have to do what is best for the team”.
‘I think it would have been win-win to put him in tonight – he has to play well. If he does, great. If he doesn’t, the manager says that’s the reason why. You have to treat superstars differently, you can’t treat everyone the same.;
