Arsenal icon Arsene Wenger claims he understood the true message Harry Kane was trying to send in his recent Tottenham interview.
The striker spoke out about Spurs’ struggles this season, but hinted he could stay at the club this summer despite entering the final 12 months of his existing deal.
Kane has been linked with a move to Manchester United having so far failed to agree terms on a new contract at Spurs.
A stuttering second-half of the season has seen Tottenham drop out of the top four and the team now looks unlikely to qualify for the Champions League.
In a recent interview, Kane spoke about Tottenham getting back to the standards of Mauricio Pochettino’s time in charge.
And legendary former Arsenal manager Wenger believes Kane’s comments were to point out the Spurs squad’s failings this season and how they are falling below the standards he expects.
“Translated it means that not everybody gives the maximum to perform during training to be good enough in the game,” Wenger told beIN Sports.
“Is it down the character of the players or is it down to the whole atmosphere inside the training ground or the coaches? I don’t know.
“You need to live every day with players to know what’s really going on, and what works and what doesn’t work.
“You have to create a culture inside the club that allows the players to perform.”
The Frenchman continued: “You need clear rules for everybody to see what you tolerate and what you don’t tolerate. When you talk about values, most of the time it is [about] what is not tolerated.
“Players like Harry Kane have high standards. He is now frustrated because for years the team looked on the way up. Since two or three years they look to have failed again.”
Wenger also made a prediction about Kane’s future, expecting the striker to stay put for one last season before departing as a free agent – leaving him free to choose the destination of his next club.
He added: “If you are his agent, Harry Kane has one year to go, in one year he is completely free, what do you tell him?
“Give your club a last chance and then you go.
“It’s not about money, but, in the end, it’s always about money.
“He will not go for less than £80million. You don’t find strikers of that quality.”
