Arsenal are reportedly yet to reach an agreement with star defender William Saliba regarding a new contract.
The 22-year-old has been one of the Gunners‘ standout players this season after finally being given his chance following three loan spells away from the Emirates.
With his deal in north London to expire in 2024, Mikel Arteta’s side are understood to be desperate to hand him fresh terms.
The France international himself hinted at committing his future to Arsenal in February.
But in a blow for the Premier League table toppers, it has been claimed that talks are at a standstill.
The news will come as a great disappointment to Arsenal fans, who have been left reeling over their 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.
It is now four games without a win for the Gunners, with their awful form coinciding with Saliba’s back injury which he picked up last month.
And to make matters worse for supporters, the club aren’t close in tying him down to a new deal, which could lead to a potential summer sale.
Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s VIBE with Five YouTube channel, The Athletic’s football correspondent David Ornstein said: ” [Saliba] is out of contract in the summer of 2024.
“We’ve seen [Gabriel] Martinelli was sorted out. Then there was an agreement with [Bukayo] Saka, which has not been to our knowledge signed or announced yet.
“Let’s see what happens on that front though I’m not aware of any glitches.
“And then it comes to Saliba. We haven’t heard any evidence to suggest there’s an agreement close or in place yet for that.
“It kind of underlines his importance since he’s been out and that may play into the contract negotiation.
“But for the time being it’s a player that Arsenal are going to have to do without [due to injury].
“And we’ve seen the impact of that, unfortunately Rob Holding has had a tough time since he’s come into the side.”
