With his back to the wall Matteo Berrettini advanced to the final of the Tennis Napoli Cup on Saturday. After a sluggish start, the Italian improved his serve to defeat American Mackenzie McDonald 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3. Berrettini struggled on service in the first set and was bothered by a foot pain, requiring a medical timeout at 2-5 in the opening in a hard-fought match at the ATP 250 event. However, the second seed stayed focused on the task at hand and gradually turned the match around. In the second and third sets, he hit 10 aces and 30 winners to advance after two hours and 25 minutes on home soil.
Berrettini, who did not drop a set in his first two matches in Naples, will meet countryman Lorenzo Musetti in the final on Sunday after the 20-year-old defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-4. Musetti had reached the semi-finals of his previous two events in Sofia and Florence, but he never appeared in danger of doing so again in Naples, where he found rhythm behind his groundstrokes to command play against Kecmanovic. He broke the Serbian’s serve three times on his way to an 89-minute victory, much to the joy of the home crowd.
