As the Boston Celtics helped to officially open the NBA season in their home game at TD Garden, they began by paying tribute to the greatest player in franchise history – Bill Russell.
Russell, a pioneer for African Americans in the sport and an NBA Hall of Famer, passed away on July 31, 2022 at age 88.
The Celtics opened their season with a ceremony before the game honoring Russell’s achievements with the organization – including winning eleven titles as a player and two as head coach – as well as those off the court.
The NBA announced shortly after his death that Russell’s number 6 will be retired league-wide. He’s the only player to have this honor. In addition, the Celtics began playing with the number 6 subtlety marked in the paint below the basket.

‘Bill Russell was a great man. But what did that mean? What defined his greatness?,’ Celtics forward Jaylen Brown wondered.
‘Who he was as a mentor, a father, or a member of his community. Most certainly his eleven championships here in Boston – both playing and coaching. But undoubtedly Bill Russell was a great man for what and who he stood for.
‘During a peak of racial tension in our society, he represented a type of nobility and honor that transcended sports. The amount of respect he receives from his people will live on eternally, and I’m grateful to [have been] able to shake his hand.
‘He was a true champion both on and off the floor and our gratitude is endless. I started off by saying Bill Russell was a great man. In closing, Bill Russell was the greatest of men, and the NBA, this organization, this world was very lucky to have him. May he rest in peace.’
