Cody Gakpo Faces Consequences for Liverpool’s Title Celebration

The Football Association will reportedly issue a warning to Cody Gakpo over his celebrations during Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Gakpo scored in the title-securing victory and removed his shirt to reveal a vest with the message ‘I belong to Jesus’. As he celebrated lifting the trophy after the game, the Dutch forward once again removed his shirt.

While the act of removing a shirt typically brings about a yellow card, Gakpo faced particular scrutiny as his undershirt fell foul of International Football Association Board rules, which state: “Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images.”

The Mail state that Gakpo will face no further punishment but will instead be issued a warning by the FA over the regulations.

Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, has avoided punishment for his goal celebration, which saw him grab a phone from a staff member and take a selfie with the Anfield crowd.

The pair will be free to see out the season with Liverpool, who begin their celebration tour with a trip to Chelsea on Sunday.

Title rivals Arsenal will then travel to Anfield the following weekend, before meetings with Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace bring an end to a famous campaign which has seen Liverpool match Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight English titles.

Gakpo has been influential to that success this season, chipping in with nine goals and four assists in the Premier League.
