A dominant force in the 1970s, Spitz won seven gold medals at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, breaking the record for most gold medals won by a single athlete at a single Games.

Mark Spitz won seven gold medals in the 1972 Munich Olympics, this was the highest medals in a single Olympic before it was broken by his countryman Michael Phelps winning 8 golds in Beijing.
