England prop Kyle Sinckler has signed a one-year extension to his Bristol contract, ending speculation he would move abroad after next year’s World Cup.

The dynamic front-row forward missed England’s summer tour win over Australia as he recovered from a back problem but he remains a key figure for head coach Eddie Jones.

Sinckler had been linked with interest from French clubs as the 11 Gallagher Premiership teams left standing this season continue to try and balance their squads amid the league’s financial crisis.

Sinckler, 29, is a two-time British & Irish Lions tourist and revealed: ‘It was an easy decision for me to stay at Bristol and I feel like I’ve got unfinished business here.

‘I’m excited for what’s to come from this group and feel very blessed to play for a club with such incredible supporters.’

The Premiership has already lost two clubs this season after Worcester and Wasps both fell into administration and were suspended from the league.

Ongoing monetary problems and the lowering of the Premiership’s salary cap – the amount teams can spend on player wages – has made it difficult for clubs to agree new deals with their squad.

But Sinckler’s status as one of the first names on the team sheet for both club and country when fit means Bristol have moved quickly to secure his services.

The 52-cap international joined from Harlequins in July 2020 and has made 38 appearances for the Bears. Sinckler will remain at Ashton Gate until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Bristol director of Rugby Pat Lam said: ‘It’s fantastic for the Bears to retain someone of Kyle’s calibre. ‘For him to re-sign with the Bears is a huge positive for the club.
