Frank Lampard insists he has no worries about Anthony Gordon’s future and has urged the young England star to focus on the pursuit of self-improvement.

Gordon, who was the subject of intense interest from Chelsea during the summer window, has a contract with Everton that runs to June 2025 but the club have been in discussions about upgrading his deal in recognition of the progress he has made over the last 12 months.

There were reports over the weekend that Gordon was not happy with the terms that were claimed to being offered – in the region of £100,000 per week – but that has been dismissed by sources close to the 21-year-old and Lampard certainly hasn’t seen anything to suggest he is unhappy.

What Lampard is eager to see, however, is Gordon knuckling down further in training.

His form had fluctuated before he was suspended for last Saturday’s trip to Tottenham – he had already received five bookings – and his manager is looking for consistency.

‘I have no concerns about the noise around the contract and I have spoken to him about it,’ said Lampard.

‘I think that’s private, and I think unfortunately the headline is the numbers people talk about and obviously that should stay private.

‘Generally I’m all for players getting what they deserve in their contracts. That is a separate story. My main concern as a manager is getting Anthony playing at his best.

‘He is our player, he will remain that for a long time, and I think we showed that with our intention in the summer.

‘And the conversation about his contract hopefully gets concluded, in a positive way, sooner rather than later. If I’m really honest, my eye is not on that at the minute, it’s more on games so I haven’t had that conversation for a few weeks.’

Asked whether he was concerned Gordon’s head had been turned, Lampard said: ‘No – I hope not. He’s a young player so I shouldn’t just assume that what happened at the back end of the window doesn’t affect him, doesn’t affect the feeling around him.

‘You try and have a close relationship, which i do have with him. We laugh and joke a lot, he’s a good lad a funny lad, and I can be to the point with him as well, he takes that as well so I’m not really focusing on that either.’
