Gary Neville has urged Manchester United’s leadership to put an end to their pattern of experimental coaching appointments following the unexpected dismissal of former manager Ruben Amorim.

The Portuguese manager was abruptly let go on Monday morning, a mere day after delivering a remarkable outburst directed at the club’s executives in the wake of a 1-1 stalemate against Leeds on Sunday.

According to insights from Daily Mail Sport, the decision to part ways with Amorim had already been finalized on Friday. This came after a crucial meeting between the director of football, Jason Wilcox, and Amorim, following the draw with Leeds.

A week later, Neville emphasized his perspective on the United squad, asserting that the club should prioritize finding a head coach who comprehends the essence of attacking and entertaining football, a style ingrained in their history.

“I expected Manchester United to adapt more effectively to the back three formation,” Neville remarked during an interview with Sky Sports.

‘It’s a difficult system, wing-backs is challenging. The positions behind the centre forward are difficult positions. There are quite specialists positions in the system.

‘But that’s a failing upon the manager, the players and the club, in terms of not recruiting properly for it.

‘The experiments have got to stop. There is a very good video online that Bobby Charlton talks about what Man Utd is as a football club. Adventurous, exciting football, playing young players, entertaining the crowd. Man United must take risks and play attacking football.

‘Man Utd have got to appoint a manager that fits the DNA of their club. Ajax would never change for anybody, Barcelona would never change for anybody.’

Neville also explained what he believed would be crucial to reinvigorating Man United’s fortunes in this post-Amorim period. 

At the moment, former Man United star Darren Fletcher has been handed the reins as a caretaker manager, stepping up from his current role coaching the academy’s under-18s side. 

The team sit sixth in the Premier League standings, some way away from the dire straits Man United found themselves in as they slumped to a 15th-placed finish at the end of last season. 

And Neville was convinced that with the right priorities, the team could again challenge for Champions League football next term.

‘The major concern for United is to try and get (Matthijs) De Ligt and (Harry) Maguire back as quickly as possible, to get (Kobbie) Mainoo back fit, to get the lads back from AFCON, obviously when they’re knocked out of the tournament or they win it, and try and get as many good players out on that pitch as possible,’ he continued. 

‘I do think this league this year is below average, I do think this Manchester United team are still in a position whereby they can get into the Champions League.

‘They need an experienced coach who knows how to get them over the line, and Manchester United do need to return to a back four with wide players who can go and basically attack with that.

‘I’m surprised the back three didn’t work, I was actually quite excited by seeing it come into play, because I didn’t think we had a great back four, but having watched us play a back four the other week (against Newcastle) they were really good when they played, it was (Patrick) Dorgu who played on the right wing, and it was (Diogo) Dalot and (Luke) Shaw left-back and right-back.

‘I just felt it looked like it belonged again, and I think that’s ultimately now they need to go back to that.

‘They pretty much will I think, I can’t believe Darren Fletcher is going to go with a back three at Burnley on Wednesday night.

‘He’s going to go with a back four with probably two midfield players, a number 10, a striker and two wide players.’

Man United will get their first opportunity to turn the page on the Amorim era on Wednesday, when they travel to Turf Moor to face Burnley in league action.
