Bayern Munich’s sporting director has admitted the club may not be able to afford to sign Joao Cancelo on a permanent transfer this summer.
The ousted Manchester City full-back signed on loan with the Bundesliga outfit until the end of the season after being shipped out on deadline day.

The deal includes an option to buy at the end of the loan for a fee of £62.8million, too. However, whilst Bayern want to make that happen, they’ve admitted it might not be doable.
Speaking about the January signing, Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “But we also told him clearly that this sum is difficult for us to imagine in the next few years.”
There is hope within the Bundesliga club that they can reach a deal with Man City, though, particularly if there’s no longer a place for the Portuguese star in Pep Guardiola’s plans for next season.
“But I have also learned if all sides absolutely want a common solution, you can also manage it in the end,” Salihamidzic continued.
“He knows that he has been one of our dream players for years.”
If Cancelo’s start to life with Bayern is anything to go off, it’s likely they’ll be even keener to keep him come the end of the campaign.

Just a day after signing, Cancelo made his full debut for the Bundesliga leaders as they faced Mainz in the last 16 of the DFB-Pokal.
It took the 28-year-old just 17 minutes to make his mark, assisting Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s opener with a delicious cross over to the far post.
He then recorded another in his league debut on Sunday, assisting Kingsley Coman in their game against Wolfsburg.
Cancelo had fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad and was an unused substitute in their previous three games before his move.

Academy star Rico Lewis is now one of Guardiola’s first choices in the team at full-back instead, with the 18-year-old impressing for the side.
However, Cancelo has since revealed his move had nothing to do with a reported falling out with Guardiola.
“I’ve not had much game time in the past few weeks, which influenced my decision,” he said at his unveiling. “It has nothing to do with my relationship with Pep.
“I decided to leave for a new adventure. I’m happy here, it’s a big club, with a lot of history.”
