Joe Hart has broken down Altay Bayindir’s mistake during Man United’s defeat by Arsenal and pinpointed exactly where the goalkeeper went wrong.
United put in a promising display on the opening weekend against the Gunners, but they were beaten 1-0 thanks to Riccardo Calafiori’s 13th minute header.
The goal came from a corner when Bayindir, who was under pressure from William Saliba, failed to deal with Declan Rice’s dangerous cross and could only palm the ball to Calafiori who was just yards out.
‘As the ball gets to here,’ Hart began on a freeze frame of the ball arriving in the box. ‘Bayindir will be very aware that that’s his ball so he now needs to deal with Saliba and create some room so he can deal with the ball.
‘He’ll be well aware he’s not catching it but he’ll want to get a good punch on it and clear his lines.’

As the play was moved on, Hart continued: ‘This is the moment he just manages to free himself. He gets away from Saliba so this is where he needs forward momentum and he needs to be setting off and attacking the ball.
‘He knows that Saliba knows what he’s doing in this situation. He’s Arsenal’s strongest player, he’s got a low centre of gravity and he just gets the nudge in as Bayindir tries to take off.
‘And that is why it results in him not being able to use his right hand, (he) flaps the left hand at it and Calafiori cannot believe his luck.’
Mason Mount was the United player tasked with dealing with Saliba at the corner, and while there was a vast size difference, Hart felt the midfielder should have done better.
‘Now in this situation personally I would always want my team-mate next to me,’ he added. ‘I want Mount on the other side of Saliba so I could use him as a human shield.
‘Like I say he’s up against Arsenal’s strongest player. I’d be using Mount to get him away, clear myself some space, occupy my left arm and then I’d look to use my right arm to punch.
‘But because he’s embroiled in such a strong battle and his weight is all over the place, he’s not able to get a good solid punch.’

He also highlighted the role William Saliba (No 2) played in what was a decisive goal for Arsenal
Despite the error, Amorim defended Bayindir after the game and insisted he was content with the Turk, Andre Onana and Tom Heaton as his three keeping options.
‘We proved today that we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal, and we were the better team,’ he said. ‘I’m happy with the three goalkeepers.’
However, Wayne Rooney, who was also critical of Bayindir, disagreed with Amorim’s assessment and felt that goalkeeper was a problem position for United, while he urged the club to sign exiled PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
‘Yeah I think [signing a new goalkeeper] has to be a thing,’ he told The Wayne Rooney show. ‘I go back to when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard in goal. I don’t think there was 100 per cent trust from the defenders in front of those two goalkeepers.
‘But the minute [Edwin] Van der Sar came in and calmed everything down, the defenders trusted him a lot more and you saw a better output of performance.
‘And I think that’s where Manchester United are. They want that confidence and that trust in the goalkeeper behind them to tell them where to go. Sometimes it can be just having a calmness and speaking at the right moments.
‘The goalkeeper is so important in providing that calmness throughout the team. Especially the back four or five. Van der Sar did that for us.’
Rooney went on to defend the much-maligned Onana, but reaffirmed why a move for Donnarumma is a no brainer.

Wayne Rooney also chimed in with his view and said Ruben Amorim must sign a new keeper

Rooney said a move for PSG’s exiled keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma would make sense
‘Onana’s come in (and) he’s a fantastic keeper,’ Rooney added. ‘I watched him at Inter Milan and he was brilliant so if they don’t bring in a new goalkeeper you hope he can get back to that. But he certainly didn’t fill us with confidence last season.
‘I think with Donnarumma, he’s 26. He’s one of the best keepers in the world. It would be crazy if Manchester United didn’t go for him.
‘I don’t think he’s a risk. I saw a stat the other day – the errors leading to direct goals. His was zero. Some of his other stats weren’t right at the top, but I think that’s important.
‘When a goalkeeper makes a mistake it’s difficult to recover, in that game and moving forward, so depending on what they can do salary wise, I would certainly be trying to bring him into the club.’
Several United fans had also taken to social media to vent their fury at Bayindir after the gaffe, with the Turk having played instead of Onana, who has just returned from injury.
They similarly backed Rooney’s view that the error meant United have to go out and sign Donnarumma.
One X user said: ‘I can’t believe I’m wishing Andre Onana was fit to start ahead of Bayindir, what a time to be alive.’
Another added: ‘New season, same rubbish. Bayindir making Onana look decent.’ A third wrote: ‘United gotta go ALL IN for Donnarumma.’
Agreeing, an extra fan quipped: ‘Buy Donnarumma now! Oh my God! Here we go again!’
A fifth supporter added: ‘Go and get Donnarumma. Two clowns as first and second choice. [Tom] Heaton’s the best option we have.’
Meanwhile, speaking while commentating on the game for Sky Sports, Gary Neville placed the blame solely on Bayindir despite claims he was impeded.
‘The goalkeeper has got to be stronger,’ Neville said. ‘He will complain that he was fouled. He has a player in front of him, there is a lot of pushing and pulling, but he has to be stronger. I don’t think [William] Saliba has done anything wrong.
‘The ball just goes through Bayindir’s hands and Calafiori is there to profit.’
Bayindir joined the club from Fenerbahce in September 2023 but has previously been criticised for several high-profile errors, particularly when conceding from set-pieces.
