With her totally dominant performance against Tereza Martincova, Anett Kontaveit should be happy. She had to come back from a set and double break behind in their Cincinnati match a few weeks ago. This time, she won 6-2, 6-1 in 67 minutes thanks to 37 winners and 16 unforced errors. She beat Wang Xiyu, 21, in the opening match of the tournament, which marked her nation’s first appearance on a WTA calendar, by a slim 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 margin. The top seed won’t care too much about the type of victories that come because she has lost more than two matches in a run in 10 of her last 11 events.
In the second round, Ysaline Bonaventure played a match in which she committed 10 double faults, fell behind 1-3 in the opening set, and subsequently faced a set point in the tiebreak. But she ultimately defeated ninth-seeded Jil Teichmann, a former world no. 21, 7-6, 6-3, to earn her fourth victory in Tallinn. When she started in the qualifying round and proceeded to shock Shelby Rogers, 6-4, 6-4, in the first round, she had not previously won a WTA main tournament match since July 2021. Despite three attempts, the 28-year-old has never advanced past the WTA quarterfinals, most recently falling to Andrea Petkovic in Hamburg in 2021.
Anett Kontaveit and Ysaline Bonaventure are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 Tallinn Open on Friday, September 30. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 19 and end on October 2.
