The conclusion of Thursday’s Europa League play-off ties has finalised the potential opponents for both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Friday’s draw.

The two English sides both booked their place in the last 16 through strong group phases. United finished third with 18 points from eight games, while Spurs were just one place and one point behind. Because of their close finishes, the pair share the same group of potential opponents.

Before the play-offs, both United and Tottenham knew they would face one off AZ Alkmaar, Galatasaray, Real Sociedad or Midtjylland in the next round, but that group has now been reduced to two after the play-offs came to an end.

Dutch giants AZ Alkmaar made it through to the draw by surprisingly overcoming Turkish champions Galatasaray alongside La Liga’s Real Sociedad, who got the better of Midtjylland. They will be the opponents for United and Spurs, with Friday’s draw set to determine which side they will take on.

Sociedad midfielder Brais Mendez fired a warning to the two English sides, insisting they are not afraid of facing either in the next round.

“We don’t care [who we play],” Mendez said. “They are two rivals that just with the name they have… they are incredible. If we have to go far, we have to beat the best. I’m not afraid of any of them.”
