West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has been discharged from hospital just over three weeks after a horrific car accident in Epping Forest, Essex.

Antonio had to be airlifted to hospital in London after crashing into a tree, becoming trapped in the vehicle. He underwent surgery on a broken leg the following day.

The 34-year-old Jamaica international, who won’t play again this season due to his injuries, spent Christmas in hospital but is deemed well enough to continue recovering at home.

West Ham have raised almost £60,000 to donate to NHS and Air Ambulance charities in recognition of the support Antonio received through auctioning match-worn shirts and matching the amount.

A statement from the Hammers this week read: “Everyone at the club would like to reiterate their heartfelt thanks to the first responders, emergency services, air ambulance staff and the NHS for the incredible support given to Michail in the wake of the accident.”

West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen dedicated the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers two days after the accident to Antonio.

“It’s been special to see the West Ham family and the wider football community come together in support of Mic,” the winger has since said.

“We are all grateful for the care that both the NHS and Air Ambulances UK have given to Mic during a challenging time. I want to thank everyone for helping us to raise an incredible amount of money for two great causes.”
