Arsenal have confirmed the signing of England international Noni Madueke from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £48million, rising to £52m.

The 23-year-old becomes the Gunners’ fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.

Arsenal announced Madueke’s arrival early on Friday evening with a slick video posted across their social media channels.

Madueke will wear the number 20 shirt and is set to join up with his new teammates in early August, having been involved in Chelsea’s Club World Cup campaign earlier this summer.

Born in north London, Madueke began his youth career at Crystal Palace and Tottenham Hotspur before moving to the Netherlands in 2018 to join PSV.

He broke into the PSV first team as a 17-year-old and went on to make 80 senior appearances before returning to England with Chelsea in January 2023.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Madueke played 92 times, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists. He helped the club win the Europa Conference League last season and featured in their triumphant Club World Cup campaign, though he did not appear in the final, which saw the Blues stun PSG.

Winger Madueke made his England debut last September, providing an assist against Finland, and has since gone on to earn seven senior caps.

In a statement, Arsenal said: ‘We’re delighted to announce that England international Noni Madueke has joined us on a long-term contract.’

Manager Mikel Arteta added: ‘We’re all so happy to welcome Noni Madueke to the team.

‘Noni is an exciting and powerful young player, with his performances and numbers in recent seasons being of consistently high quality. He is one of the most talented wide forward players in the Premier League.

‘At just 23, Noni already brings experience of club and international football, and he knows the Premier League very well. Having seen the quality of Noni’s performances up close in recent seasons, we’re really excited he is joining us.

‘Noni joins our group with familiar England teammates and other players he knows. He will be made to feel at home straight away. His arrival will really improve our squad – we’re all thrilled to have him here. From all of us, welcome Noni and welcome to your family.’

Sporting Director Andrea Berta added: ‘We’re very pleased to have concluded an excellent deal for a hugely talented young player in Noni Madueke.

‘Noni’s performance numbers and availability over recent seasons have been exceptional, reflecting his quality and professionalism.

‘Noni is a dynamic, versatile wide forward player with strong technical ability who will significantly strengthen our squad.

‘Noni already has valuable experience at the top level and we know he will make a big impact at Arsenal. Together with everyone at the club, we warmly welcome Noni to Arsenal.’

Madueke posted an emotional farewell to Chelsea on Instagram earlier on Friday, thanking staff, team-mates and fans – including those who criticised him during his time at the club.

He message began: ‘Dear Chelsea Football Club, I want to thank you for the last 3 or so years. To every staff member that helped me along this journey, thank you. To my teammates thank you for everything, I leave with only love and admiration for you guys. We achieved so much this season and I honestly wish you guys nothing but the best.

‘To Enzo Maresca, it was a privilege to play under you, thank you for trying to better me as a player and as a person. Lastly, thank you to every single Chelsea fan. Thank you for the love, the praise and also the criticism, I appreciate it all. I leave here with nothing but fond memories.

‘Love NM11.’

Madueke is expected to provide competition and cover for Bukayo Saka on the right wing, while also offering an option on the left. His first return to Stamford Bridge as an Arsenal player could come when the two sides meet in the Premier League in November.

He is the latest in a growing list of players to swap Chelsea for Arsenal in recent seasons, following the likes of Kai Havertz, Jorginho, David Luiz, Raheem Sterling (on loan) and fellow new recruit Kepa.

Madueke joined Chelsea from PSV in January 2023 and went on to play 92 games for the Blues, while he scored 20 goals and provided nine assists.

He won the Conference League with Chelsea last season and also featured in their successful Club World Cup campaign although he wasn’t involved in the final as he neared his move to Arsenal.

The England international is set to become Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer after Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard.

Arsenal are also working on the signing of Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres.

The signing of Madueke has been criticised by some Arsenal fans, with his price tag being called into question.

However, others believe that the 23-year-old could be a useful addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Madueke could provide cover for Bukayo Saka on the right wing and may also be an option on the left flank for the Gunners.

His first return to Stamford Bridge as an Arsenal player could come when the sides meet in the Premier League in November.

Arsenal have signed a host of players from Chelsea in recent years, including Kepa, Raheem Sterling (on loan), Kai Havertz, Jorginho and David Luiz.
