Ralf Rangnick has revealed a shortlist of six star players he wanted to sign at Manchester United, but the club refused.

Rangnick oversaw a disastrous spell as interim manager at Old Trafford after taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the middle of the season.

Things did not improve under the German, as the club ended with their lowest ever Premier League points tally on record.

His tenure at Old Trafford was always going to be a short one to allow the club time to find a new boss.

Rangnick was initially going to take an upstairs role at the club, but decided to leave and is now manager of the Austria national team.

Erik ten Hag was appointed in the summer and was backed in the transfer market, but Rangnick has revealed the same luxury was not afforded to him.

“There was no such [transfer] dossier, and it was never wanted by the club,” Rangnick said, speaking to German outlet BILD.

“But even without such a script, it was clear to everyone that there was a need in many areas.

“That’s why we were already discussing players like Josko Gvardiol and Christopher Nkunku from RB Leipzig. Those were names that were realistic.

“We also talked about Alvaro Morata, Luis Diaz, Dusan Vlahovic and, as I said, Erling Haaland when they were still on the market.

“But the club decided at that time to rebuild the team under the new coach.”

Chelsea have been linked with moves for Gvardiol and Nkunku and could sign them as early as January.

Diaz ended up at Liverpool, while Vlahovic joined Juventus despite an offer from Arsenal.

Haaland, of course, has signed for Man City and is ripping up the Premier League with 17 goals in 11 Premier League games.
