Remembering Dennis Condrey: Celebrated Wrestling Icon of The Midnight Express Passes at 74

The wrestling community is in mourning following the death of iconic figure Dennis ‘Loverboy’ Condrey, who passed away at the age of 74. The news was shared by fellow wrestler Dax Harwood, who took to social media to honor the memory of the esteemed former tag team star.

Condrey was celebrated for his role in forming one of the most legendary tag teams of the 1980s, The Midnight Express, alongside Bobby Eaton. The duo left an indelible mark on the wrestling world, captivating audiences with their dynamic performances until Eaton’s passing in 2021.

Harwood, who considered Condrey both a mentor and friend, delivered the heart-wrenching announcement on Friday via an emotional Instagram post. The cause of Condrey’s death has not been disclosed.

In his tribute, Harwood shared personal insights into their relationship, recounting how Condrey would frequently text him after matches, offering guidance and constructive criticism. This mentorship was a significant source of inspiration and growth for Harwood.

“That is something that’ll never be lost on me,” Harwood expressed in his heartfelt message. “One of my heroes loved me enough to take time out of his day to let me know how proud he was of me.”

He added: ‘I can tell you with absolute honesty and sincerity, I’ve never seen a better Tag Team than Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton.’ 

Harwood shared that Condrey’s wife, Theresa, had granted him permission to set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to support the family through funeral expenses. 

Condrey gained prominence in the 1970s and 1980s, primarily as a founding member of The Midnight Express.

He made his professional wrestling debut in 1973 and went on to compete under a number of different promotions throughout his career, including the AWA and NWA. 

He ultimately retired from in-ring competition in 2011, bringing to an end a career that spanned nearly four decades. 

After the heartbreaking news of his death broke, tributes to the wrestling icon flooded with many fans hailing his impact on the sport. 

All Elite Wrestling paid tribute to ‘Loverboy’ in a post on X, writing: ‘the wrestling world are mourning the passing of ‘Loverboy’ Dennis Condrey, one half of the legendary Midnight Express.

‘Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends and fans during this difficult time.’

Former WWE announcer Gary Cappetta shared: ‘My sincerest condolences to the family and friends of DENNIS CONDREY, known best as member of The Midnight Express with Randy Rose and then Bobby Eaton managed by Jim Cornette. Condrey passed away yesterday evening (Friday) at 76 years old.’

‘RIP Dennis Condrey. The hits keep coming today,’ wrestling media personality Anthony Maurizio wrote on X. ‘[…] Rest easy, Dennis. Hope you’re cracking one open with Bobby again. Until we meet again…’
