Heartwarming footage has emerged of Richarlison unable to hold back the tears when meeting with Brazilian legend Ronaldo after his side progressed to the quarter-finals of the World Cup following a 4-1 victory.

The pair met after the Tottenham Hotspur striker starred in a dazzling Brazil display last night that sent South Korea crashing out of the World Cup.

The Brazilian No 9 scored the third goal after his side came racing out of the blocks, quickly going 4-0 up at Stadium 974 in Doha before the half-time whistle came.

Although South Korea pulled a mere consolation goal back – courtesy of Paik Seung-ho – Ronaldo Nazario watched on alongside fellow legend Cafu as Brazil set a marker down as the side to beat to win this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Footage from after the game showed the Brazilian legend appearing to surprise an emotional Richarlison – who could not help but hold back tears as he walked into a room to be greeted by an idol.

The modern day ‘R9’ was then interviewed by the Brazilian icon – who was even taught Richarlison’s famous pigeon dance.

Throughout the game, Brazil offered up a variety of dance moves as the goals flew in, with manager Tite even getting involved as he mimicked Richarlison’s pigeon celebration too.

During the half-time break, Roy Keane – who is working with ITV in Qatar – furiously slammed the Brazil side for their ‘disrespectful’ dancing.

Ronaldo scored an astonishing 62 times in just 99 games, making him the third highest goal scorer ever for Brazil.

The former Barcelona, Real Madrid and AC Milan star is only surpassed by Neymar – who added to his tally last night from the penalty spot on return from injury – and Pele, who the Brazil team paid tribute to last night as he battles with illness.

Ronaldo was also part of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup winning squad in South Korea and Japan and won the golden boot after netting eight times, including twice in a 2-0 victory over Germany in the final.

Richarlison – who dons the famous No 9 shirt worn by the likes of Ronaldo – secured his 20th goal for the national team last night as he sent his Spurs teammate Son Heung-Min back from Qatar.

The South Korea winger was a peripheral figure for large parts of the game and was consoled by Richarlison at the full-time whistle.

The Brazilian striker went the extra mile and even sent him a message later on Twitter, hailing him as ‘a hero to your people’.

He wrote: ‘I know how hard you fought to be here and that’s why you’re a hero to your people.’

Richarlison’s note about how hard his 30-year-old club-mate had worked to be in Qatar was no doubt referencing Son playing through the pain barrier.

Prior to the tournament, Son missed three games for Spurs having suffered a fractured eye socket and undergone surgery.

He wore a protective face mask for all of South Korea’s games but understood there were serious risks of further injury with any impact to his face.

It has been a much more successful campaign for his Spurs teammate Richarlison who grabbed a brace in Brazil’s opening Group G game against Serbia – including an outrageous acrobatic finish that was lauded a goal of the tournament contender.

The striker received the ball with his back to goal in the box, flicked it up in the air with his first touch before turning and volleying hard to double Brazil’s lead. It was the second of the game after a poacher’s finish earlier on in the game.

Brazil’s comfortable win saw them progress to the quarter-finals in Qatar where they will next face off against Croatia on Friday.

Croatia were made to work harder for their win which took place earlier in the day. They were forced to come back from behind after Daizen Maeda gave Japan a first-half lead.

However, another Spurs star – Ivan Perisic – levelled things up and his side would go on to progress through penalties following a heroic display from goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic.
