Pablo Carreno Busta made his debut on indoor hard courts this year by easily defeating Thiago Monteiro in straight sets in the opening round of the ATP Gijon, 6-4 7-6. He had a chance to go all the way when he played his first match on the surface in 2022 a few weeks ago in Sofia, but he was defeated by eventual champion Marc-Andrea Huesler in the first round. The Spaniard had many subpar performances during the year and struggled with consistency at various points, but a few strong showings in major competitions helped him have a successful season. At the Montreal Masters, he won the biggest championship of his career. In the Barcelona 500, he came in second place to Carlos Alcaraz.
Arthur Rinderknech’s ranking and self-assurance suffered greatly during the first nearly eight months of the 2022 season, but he has partially recovered thanks to some respectable successes on indoor hard courts, which is probably his preferred surface. Between ATP Dubai in February and the US Open in September, the Frenchman could only win three main-draw matches, but he quickly regained his form on indoor hard courts, and this will be his third consecutive quarterfinal appearance on the surface following ATP Metz (QF) and Tel Aviv (QF).
