Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim insists he is “not worried” about losing his job, despite an extremely challenging first three months in the hotseat.

Amorim was recruited in November to replace the dismissed Erik ten Hag, with United triggering a break clause in his contract with Sporting CP to bring the Portuguese boss to England immediately.

The 40-year-old has been considered one of Europe’s brightest managerial prospects in recent seasons, having ended Sporting’s long Primeira Liga title drought in 2020/21, won again in 2023/24 and left the club on course for another after a blistering start to 2024/25 prior to his exit.

But Amorim has brought his own style of play to United, completely different from what Ten Hag’s squad was used to and is determined to implement his own ideas rather than compromise.

The boss has pushed the idea of short-term pain for long-term gain, having not had a summer transfer window or pre-season with which to mould the squad to his philosophy. The issue, however, is that results have been poor, with Sunday’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur a ninth in 21 games. It’s also been just four wins in 14 Premier League outings, losing five league games in December alone.

“I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst. The rest I am not thinking about. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident in my work and I just want to win games,” Amorim explained after the Spurs clash.

“The place in the table is my worry, I am not worried about me,” he added, referencing United sitting 15th in the current standings. The club hasn’t finished that low since relegation from the top flight in 1974, with their lowest finish since that time being 13th in the 1989/90 campaign.

“I have a lot of problems, my job is so, so hard here. But I stick with my beliefs. We just need to face it and not run away, that is my feeling. Today will hurt, it is a tough pain to lose so many games.”

Next up for United is a reunion with former manager David Moyes, visiting Everton on Saturday. Amorim’s first win in English football came against the Toffees back at the start of December, a 4-0 victory over an Everton side then managed by Sean Dyche.
