Holger Rune put on another gutsy performance on Thursday, fighting back from a break down to defeat last week’s Moselle Open champion Lorenzo Sonego in the second round, after battling past the Netherlands’ Tim van Rijthoven in the first round. The Italian outplayed the 19-year-old Dane in the first set tiebreak, but he clawed his way back into the match by clinching the second set with a solitary break in the final game. Rune won 85% of the points (44 of 52) on his first serve during the two-hour and 18-minute match. Sonego did not break him during the match, and he struck 38 winners to the Italian’s 28 to advance to the last eight.

Ilya Ivashka began his campaign in the first round, defeating Sweden’s Mikael Ymer 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-5. That game lasted three hours and twenty-three minutes. In the second round, the Belarussian defeated the Bulgarian 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in an hour and 52 minutes. Ivashka saved all seven break points he faced in the match and converted two of seven to defeat the third seed. He will be pleased to have made only 10 unforced errors against Dimitrov, compared to 42 against Ymer. Ivashka, a semifinalist in Atlanta this year, hopes to reach the final four for the second time in 2022.
