Scottie Scheffler Wins Olympic Gold Medal

American golfer Scottie Scheffler has now added an Olympic gold medal to his collection.

At Le Golf National, south of Paris, Scheffler, who won his second Masters title earlier this year, shot a late storm of birdies to surge into first place after the 17th.

The world number one shot a course record-tying 62 and then waited nervously to see if Fleetwood would tie him for the lead and force a playoff hole.

Scheffler celebrated his Olympic victory on the range with caddie Ted Scott after the British player missed the final-hole birdie that would have won the match.

In France, Fleetwood had to settle for silver, and the top three was completed by Hideki Matsuyama, the Japanese great who finished with a final-round score of 65 to win bronze on -17.

With the win, Scheffler becomes the first-ever world number one to win an Olympic gold medal while occupying the top rank.

This marks the most recent development in the incredible tale of the 28-year-old, who made headlines earlier this year when he was famously detained en route to the Kentucky PGA Championship.

After shooting three birdies in his final six holes on Saturday to close the gap on the lead to four shots, he entered the final round with momentum.

The win is the latest chapter of a remarkable story for Scheffler, who was infamously arrested while making his way into the PGA Championship in Kentucky earlier this year

Scheffler was taken into custody on May 17, 2024, at 6:20 a.m. in the vicinity of Valhalla Golf Club, which is home to the 2024 PGA Championship.

In addition to a class-C felony and three misdemeanors (disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic, reckless driving, and second-degree assault on a police officer), he was also charged with reckless driving. At 8:40 that morning, Scheffler was sent free on his own recognizance. On May 29, Scheffler’s accusations were withdrawn.

Scheffler and the Louisville Metro Police Department both decided not to press charges in connection with his apprehension.

Scheffler’s description of the event as “‘a big misunderstanding’ is corroborated by the evidence,” according to prosecutor Mike O’Connell.

On the 17th hole, Scheffler made a searing shot out of deep rough and made the 18-foot birdie putt to take the lead for the first time all day, but it was Scheffler who surged ahead with four straight birdies down the stretch.

At 19-under 265, he set an Olympic record for the 72-hole event. After making a bogey from the rough on the 17th hole, Fleetwood lost the lead, but on the last hole, she recovered for par to earn the silver medal.

Hideki Matsuyama took home the bronze. He struggled on the back nine but finished with six consecutive pars for a 65.

In the men’s golf event, Scheffler follows Xander Schauffele as the second consecutive American to win gold in the Tokyo Games.
