Brett Ratten is reportedly set to leave St Kilda just months after signing a new contract with the AFL club.

According to AFL.com.au, Saints chiefs have come to the decision following a review of the club’s football operations, in which the team’s performances came under the spotlight.

Ratten signed a two-year extension back in July, taking him through to 2024, but a poor end to the season in which they failed to reach the finals for a second year running has forced the club’s hand.

‘As the leader of our men’s program, Brett has secured significant buy-in from his fellow coaches, staff and players alike,’ Saints president Andrew Bassat said after Ratten signed his new deal on July 8.

‘In addition to his strong football IQ, our players appreciate his ability to develop strong relationships, which he uses as a foundation to challenge each individual to get better and to deliver their role for the team.

‘This balance, and the ability to unite his coaches, players and staff in a relentless quest for excellence makes Brett the best person to lead us towards our much longed-for second premiership.’

The Saints sat fourth come Round 11 this season, holding an 8-3 record, but have since lost eight of their last 11 matches to miss out on finals altogether.

They were also quiet in the trade period and missed out on top target Jordan De Goey while only adding free agent Zaine Cordy. They also gave up Ben Long for pick 32.

‘I just worry that they are recruiting to be competitive or make finals, not necessarily win a premiership,’ David King said of the Saints’ business.

‘I’ve had concerns about this list for a whole and St Kilda fans think I’m bashing them.

‘They’ve got to be careful not to become the list clogger capital of Australia.’
