Switzerland’s team bus crashed into a police prior to their clash with Brazil this afternoon.

Footage filmed from the team’s journey to the stadium showed traffic slowing down with the police car involved in the escort receiving a bump from behind from the Swiss team bus.

Fears that injuries had been suffered among the players and staff on board were swiftly dismissed as the full squad arrived on time at Stadium 974 for their Group G clash with Brazil.

The low speed of the bus meant there was little chance of injury to any player, but it is still an incident that could shake a few up ahead of the game.

Each competing team is afforded a full police escort as a crucial security measure for each game, but Switzerland’s players and staff might have been cursing the very thing designed to keep them safe. The lack of injury to any player means it can be brushed off as merely an unusual incident.

Facing the favourites for the tournament, Brazil, in their second game Switzerland needed the best preparation they could get for the game that will see the winner qualify for the last 16.

Both sides won their opening games, with Switzerland beating Cameroon 1-0 thanks to a goal from Breel Embolo while Brazil defeated a staunch Serbia side 2-0 with two goals from Richarlison, one of which was a spectacular scissor kick effort.

Speaking ahead of the game, Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin heaped praise on Brazil, saying they were influential in him becoming interested in football.

“Personally, I have been looking forward to this clash since the draw came out,’ the 48-year-old said. ‘Since my childhood, I spoke at length about Brazil – maybe that’s why I became a footballer.

‘Of course, we are really looking forward to it. It’s great to play against big names and to show what we have.’

The Swiss were knocked out of the 2018 World Cup at the last 16 stage but have been tipped as a potential surprise package in Qatar, and they delivered on that tag in their opener, dominating the African side and should have won by more.

Granit Xhaka, captaining Switzerland, told reporters prior to the game that he would not hesitate in tackling club Arsenal team-mates Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli should they be through one-on-one.

‘It doesn’t matter that we are playing in the same team. This is the Word Cup. You play for your own team, you play for your own country and you want to win,’ he said.

Brazil are chasing their sixth World Cup crown – their first since 2002 – though they will have to navigate the rest of the group stage, at least, without talisman Neymar.

The Paris Saint Germain superstar went off injured against Serbia and it was confirmed he would miss the Switzerland and Cameroon fixtures as the medical staff nurse him back to full fitness for the last-16 and beyond.
