Tottenham ‘crying out’ for player like James Maddison, insists Glenn Hoddle, as Spurs legend calls for more creativity in Antonio Conte’s midfield and says Leicester star ‘would be sensational’

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle believes the club are ‘crying out’ for a player like Leicester City star James Maddison.

Spurs are without a win in their last three matches and questions have been asked about manager Antonio Conte’s philosophy.

Tottenham are third in the Premier League, but Conte has prioritised substance over style and many fans are not entertained.

Hoddle, one of the club’s greatest-ever midfielders, believes the club lack creativity in the middle of the park.

Conte usually deploys two holding midfielders, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur, but Hoddle insists this leaves the likes of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son without service.

Ex-Tottenham striker Alan Brazil teed up his former teammate by saying: “I get so frustrated. With Tottenham’s firepower up front, they need someone more creative in midfield to supply the service.

“It’s crying out for someone with a bit of class and adventure who goes forward rather than sideways or back all the time.”

And Hoddle responded by using in-demand Leicester star Maddison as an example of what Spurs need.

Despite the Foxes’ struggles, the Englishman is in the form of his life, with six goals and two assists in ten league games this season.

“That’s what every Spurs fan is crying out for,” Hoddle told talkSPORT Breakfast.

“I don’t think Antonio is going to look that way, he plays with Bentancur and Hojbjerg and they are very good players.

“But when they play together… one of them, with a creator in there, would be the perfect balance, in my opinion.

“Antonio wants to play two holding players and go with his firepower up front.

“But I think they need some creativity – because at the moment it’s down to Kane dropping in and creating.

“If you had [Christian] Eriksen, as an example… or Maddison, I love him.

“I think he should be in the England squad and, no disrespect to Leicester, if he was playing in a top six team, he would be sensational and an absolute shoo-in.

“Someone like that, who comes in off the lines… you’ve only got to look at the best teams in the country and they’ve got those players.”
