Julian Nagelsmann is being tipped as the bookies’ favourite to succeed Antonio Conte as Tottenham’s next permanent manager.

Spurs finally sacked Conte on Sunday after 16 months in charge, with his extraordinary post-match rant after the club’s 3-3 draw with Southampton proving to be the last straw with chairman Daniel Levy.

The club released a statement late on Sunday night confirming Conte had been sacked and that his assistant Cristian Stellini will take charge of Spurs’ final 10 games of the season.

Levy is now searching for his fourth manager in as many years and Paddy Power have Nagelsmann – who was recently sacked by Bayern Munich – as the 15/8 favourite to succeed Conte in the summer.

The market on Paddy Power is listed as ‘Tottenham manager for first game of Premier League 2023-24’ due to Stellini being confirmed as interim boss until the end of the current campaign.

Naglesmann’s shock dismissal has opened the door back up for Spurs, who were interested in hiring the German boss before he joined Bayern Munich in the summer of 2021.

The 35-year-old has admitted in the past that he has a ‘soft spot’ for the club and even once owned a Spurs shirt.

Real Madrid are also reportedly interested in Nagelsmann with Carlo Ancelotti being linked with the exit this summer, but the young coach turned down Los Blancos in 2018 when he was just 30, claiming he wasn’t just quite ready yet to take on a job of that magnitude.

WHO WILL SUCCEED CONTE THIS SUMMER?

Julian Nagelsmann – 15/8

Mauricio Pochettino – 3/1

Oliver Glasner – 5/1

Luis Enrique – 9/1

Zinedine Zidane – 11/1

Thomas Frank – 12/1

Roberto De Zerbi – 14/1

Ange Postecoglou – 18/1

Michael Carrick – 25/1

Jose Mourinho – 66/1

He told the Independent in 2020: ‘It’s normal if Real Madrid call you, you think about it. I was surprised at first, I weighed it up and I didn’t feel comfortable with a decision to go there.

‘I want to improve. If you go to Real Madrid, there’s no time to improve as a manager. You don’t have a chance to be a better manager, you already have to be the best.

‘I’m not the best now, but I can admit I want to be one of the best in future. If you go to Real Madrid or Barcelona, the fans, the media and the decision-makers don’t give you the time to grow into that.’

While Nagelsmann’s shock sacking by Bayern made him the front-runner with the bookies, former manager Mauricio Pochettino is 3/1 second favourite to take the reins back at White Hart Lane.

The Argentine remains out of work after he left his position at Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

He insisted not long after his departure from Tottenham in 2019 that he had unfinished business after failing to win a trophy during his memorable five-and-a-half-year spell. A remarkable run to the Champions League final proved the pinnacle but he was sacked months later after a poor start to the 2019-20 season.

Paddy Power are tipping Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner as one of the main candidates that could take over this summer.

He guided the Bundesliga club to the Europa League trophy last season and his style of football has been lauded, which also draws similarities to how Spurs try to play football – patient build-up, maintaining possession and using wing-backs to break teams down.

Another left-field option is Luis Enrique, a 9/1 shot who is a favourite of Tottenham’s sporting director Fabio Paratici.

A big name who has managed both Barcelona and Spain, Enrique’s philosophy of possession-based football would fit with a fanbase who have grown tired of Conte’s pragmatic style. A willingness to give youth a chance would also tick a box for Enrique but his lack of experience in England may count against the 52-year-old.

Zinedine Zidane is also among many of the big names being linked with the vacant role while Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi and Brentford boss Thomas Frank are outsiders.

Former Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick is a 25/1 bet given the fantastic job he’s doing at Middlesbrough, while a Jose Mourinho return is being offered at 66/1.
